FAQ

Our FAQs have been roughly grouped into 3 sections:

“all our guests were so amazed by how stunning your venue is!”

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you for everything over our wedding weekend! You couldn’t have been any more accommodating, and all our guests were so amazed by how stunning your venue is! The personal touches and your lovely, welcoming demeanour made the whole experience so much more wonderful for us!” Beth and Dan

Venue

Can we have exclusive use of the whole site?

Yes! Higher Holcombe hosts just a few weddings a year between spring and late summer – and you will have it all to yourselves!

What do the venue hire fees include?
  • Use of the whole venue’s 30 acres and accommodation in the farmhouse, shepherds’ huts, Lotus Belle glamping tents and the quirky Hobbit House honeymoon hideaway
  • Tables and seating for 80
  • In house PA sound system and mic for speeches and your own plug-in play list
  • Illuminated car parking facilities behind the orchard
  • Illuminated disabled parking behind the Old Dairy
  • Terrace furniture
  • Bonfire ‘boma’ with logs and bench seats
  • Use of fridges, a freezer and semi commercial kitchen
  • Twinkling lights in the Old Dairy, uplighters for the largest oaks and weeping willow trees and festival-style festoon lighting
  • DIY pick of foliage and flowers from the hedgerows, meadows and copses
  • Use of basic jars and vases for table and venue decoration
  • Rustic signage for your ‘order of the day’
  • All utilities
  • Support of the Higher Holcombe team to move furniture between the chosen ceremony space and reception area
  • Parking assistance for guests arriving 1 hour before your ceremony

NB The venue hire makes a nominal charge for crockery and cutlery hire (if required)

How many people can have a sit-down meal?

Our maximum day-time capacity is 80 people.

What is the venue’s maximum capacity?

With evening guests, the maximum capacity is 100.

How can we book?

To secure a date we ask for a non-refundable deposit of £1000. The balance is payable 3 months before your wedding.

Are you registered for marriages and/or civil partnerships?

Yes. We are an approved venue by Devon County Council (DCC).

You can hold your ceremony and sign the legal documents anywhere at the venue. Couples usually choose either the willow cathedral, silver birch church or the celebration meadow stretch tent.

Do you offer extended stays?
Yes! There are options for 1, 2 or 3 night weekends. You can have a relaxed and fun-filled extended party with plenty of time to fit everything in as well as spend quality time with your nearest and dearest.
Is there car parking available on site?

Yes. We have a ‘hard standing’ parking area behind the orchard and a disabled car parking area behind the Old Dairy.

Overflow parking is in one of the top fields.

Please car share wherever possible.

Vehicles are left at owners’ risk. Cars can be left overnight.

NB Holcombe Lane is narrow! Drive slowly and be prepared to reverse if you meet a farm vehicle with a trailer (unlikely at weekends).

Will someone from Higher Holcombe help us?

Yes! We will be there to support you with

  • The arrival of caterers, entertainers, photographers etc;
  • Health and Safety
  • Parking guidance
  • Moving furniture around before and after your ceremony
  • Providing facilities for you to separate your waste for recycling
Can we decorate the venue ourselves?
Of course! We can guarantee that your friends and family will love being involved with helping you to get everything looking gorgeous! We can help you with ladders etc but ask that you use only wire, string or twine to fix things in place. No nails, blutac, Sellotape or glue guns.
Do you provide any decorations?
Yes! There are twinkling lights in the Old Dairy, uplighters for the larger trees and LED twinkling lights in and around the glamping units. There’s a growing selection of rustic baskets and other decorative items from our prop cupboard as well as random glass jars, bottles and vases for you to arrange flowers which you can use if you like.
Can we forage for greenery?
Yes. Your friends and family will love cutting flowers and foliage from the meadows, woodland and hedgerows. These will vary according to the season. Remember to bring scissors!
What about signage?
We love a bit of rustic signage and have an ‘order of the day’, and seating plan pallets
Can our chosen photographer pay a visit before our big day?
That makes perfect sense! Ask them to give us a call first, please.
Is confetti allowed?

Yes! Yes! Yes! Petals only please – dry or fresh as you choose.

Please don’t use rice (birds eat it and it makes their tummies swell uncomfortably) or glittery types (which are basically plastic – yuck)!

Can we have a bonfire?

Yes! We have a designated area within view of the Old Dairy that we call the ‘Bonfire Boma’. There are logs and benches to sit on and we’ll provide you with a bundle of wood to burn and keep you cosy through the wee hours. We have decorated the area with funky African masks.

No unaccompanied children by the bonfire please. Bring your own marshmallows. Don’t forget the bamboo sticks!

Can we play live music / have a DJ?
Yes! We want you to enjoy your party! We’d like amplified music to be switched off by midnight, please, but you can use acoustic instruments for as long as you like. All bands and DJs must have Public Liability Insurance and the equipment used must be Portable Appliance Tested. You are required to ensure this.
Can we have staging erected for our DJ/band?
Yes. You will need to bear this (and a dance area) in mind when you are planning your room layout. We can advise you on this and make some suggestions.
Is there a PA we can use?
Yes. It’s suitable for speeches and a plug-in play list.
How about candles?
So romantic! Of course! If you wish to use candles inside, please place them sensibly, on fire proof stands. We reserve the right to move candles if we think that they are a risk. We have lots of ideas to make the place look lovely.
What about fireworks and lanterns?
Sorry. A pollution and fire risk for our woodland.
Is there an outside chill-out place?
Yes! There is a covered area right in front of the Old Dairy in case anyone wants a break from the dance floor to relax, chat and take the weight off their feet. There is also the ‘bonfire boma’ within sight of the Old Dairy, a few metres away.
Is there a room that we can use as a quiet space?
Yes. You can use one of the sitting rooms at the farmhouse. Please ensure that children are supervised (no marker pens, glue or glitter) please (!)
Who will clean up?

At the start of the hire period everything will be lovely and clean, as you would expect! Your catering teams will be responsible for clearing away after your meal, including taking away food waste and any hired items.

Our cleaners will come in the morning after your main party to clean the Old Dairy and you will be responsible for clearing away your decorations and separating your waste for recycling. Anything that you bring to the site must be taken away afterwards.

At the end of the hire, please leave the venue clear and tidy. We will thoroughly clean; but, if unusual additional cleaning is required in excess of what we consider to be normal for such an event, we will deduct additional cleaning costs from your Cautionary Damage Deposit. This also applies if waste is not separated for recycling. Food waste must be disposed of by your caterers and bar services if booked.

Food and Drink

Can we choose who does the catering for our wedding feast?
Yes! You can bring your own catering teams and we can also make recommendations. You are responsible for requesting to see their Health & Hygiene certificates. You are also responsible for ensuring that the caterers dispose of food waste off site in accordance with all relevant environmental legislation.
Can I have a Fish & Chip Van or an Ice Cream Van or similar?
That sounds fun! They must be supplied by professionals, who will be present with the equipment throughout. You are responsible for ensuring they have relevant Health & Hygiene certificates, valid PAT testing of equipment, and their Public Liability insurance.
Do you charge corkage?
Certainly not!
Can we supply our own booze and drinks?
Yes! You can supply your own beers, wines, juices and fizz for your welcome/arrival drinks, wedding breakfast, toast and for the rest of the party.
What about recycling?
We provide facilities for you to separate your waste glass / cans / cards / plastic for recycling. We will organise it after that. Please do not choose disposables. We provide minimal bins for land fill waste.
How can we keep our drinks cold?
You can use the fridges in the Old Dairy kitchen and store bought in ice in the freezer. You may need insulated boxes or bags for outside drinks.
Do you have a bar?
We don’t have an alcohol licence and we don’t sell drinks. We have bar areas both inside and out that can be used for serving drinks.
Can we set up a gin bar in the woodland?
Why not! We can help you with a tractor and trailer to take up the bits and pieces. Don’t forget the ice!
Can we use the willow cathedral as a prosecco welcome/ arrivals place?
That sounds lovely! Again, we can help you with a tractor and trailer to take up the bits and pieces. The views from up there are lovely!
Can we allow our guests to help themselves?
It’s up to you! You could even have a BYOB / Please Bring a Bottle type of party! We can arrange a team to serve you and clear away if you would like; this would be charged at cost and would need to be arranged in advance.
Do you supply china, glasses and cutlery?
Your caterers usually supply these. We prefer that you do not use disposables (the land fill issue). You can hire our plain plates and bowls if you wish at a nominal charge to cover the washing up. We also have a limited range of mismatched beer / prosecco / wine and water glasses as well as mismatched vintage-style cutlery. Get in touch if you want us to arrange.

Accommodation

Is any accommodation included in the venue hire?

Yes! Please see our accommodation page for more info.

Do we have to book all the accommodation?
Not at all! You can request a discount if you don’t require what is in your contract. However, you can only invite additional campers if you have booked all the accommodation.
Can anybody else stay?
If all the accommodation is being used, you can invite additional ‘overflow’ campers. Please contact us about this regarding numbers as you may need to hire in additional toilet and shower facilities (which you will need to organise and pay for). Overflow campers are charged £10pppn and must provide their own tents and bedding etc.
What about smoking?
The usual thing. Only outside please. Please dispose of cigarette stubs. Do not litter anywhere. Sand pots are provided in the outside chillout zone for stubbing out. There is a non-negotiable charge of £50 if cigarette butts are discarded anywhere in the grounds.
Can we bring our pets?
Only well-behaved dogs on leads – by arrangement.
Is there a curfew?
We don’t have any timing restrictions. It all depends on the energy levels of your party group! We do expect that the last person will have left (after checking that the venue is empty) by 12 noon on the final day.
Do you have a check list for us to use?

Yes. Here it is!

  • 3 months before your event – final payment
  • 4 weeks before – payment for any additional staff / support
  • 7 days before – cautionary refundable damage deposit and kitchen deposit
  • 7 days before – agents/suppliers list with contact information
  • 7 days before – names and contact details of two people appointed to remain at the end of your party to ensure that all guests leave

7 days before – your plan for your day is also helpful to us. We can help you make signs, if you’d like, so that everyone knows what to expect (and where to expect it)!
